From 21–26 April, Stockholm Art Week brings together Stockholm’s art scene over the course of a week in which museums, galleries, art institutions and artist-run initiatives open their doors for openings, art fairs, artist talks and special viewings across the city. This year’s programme features anniversaries, new public works and encounters with both international and Swedish artists. The art fairs Market Art Fair and Supermarket Art Fair both celebrate their 20th anniversaries. This year’s edition opens on 20 April at Moderna Museet.

Stockholm Art Week highlights the breadth of the city’s art scene with the aim of positioning Stockholm as an art city and Sweden as an international art destination. The city’s participants present an extensive public programme, as well as tailored content for art professionals and visiting guests. A vibrant art scene plays a crucial role in an open and contemporary society.

This year, two of the Nordic region’s most important art fairs celebrate anniversaries: Market Art Fair and Supermarket Art Fair, both marking 20 years. Market is held for the first time at Magasin 9 in Frihamnen, while Supermarket takes place in Slakthusområdet. IASPIS also celebrates its 30th anniversary.

During the week, Moderna Museet opens the exhibition Anna Casparsson – The Isle of Bliss. Fotografiska presents I Am Everything, a new exhibition by Lotta Antonsson.

In the city’s public spaces, the Italian artist Davide Rivalta inaugurates a new sculpture at Mynttorget in central Stockholm. Kummelholmen opens for one day, and Public Art Agency Sweden presents the exhibition Träet talar.

The programme also includes exclusive viewings and meetings with artists. At the Stockholm School of Economics, a private viewing of Mark Dion’s installation The Classroom is arranged. Several artist talks take place during the week, including with Petra Lindholm at Galleri Magnus Karlsson, Diana Orving at Millesgården, Davide Rivalta at the Italian Cultural Institute, Sara-Vide Ericson at the Royal Institute of Art, Filippa Arrias at Färgfabriken, Carl Johan De Geer at Galleri Helle Knudsen, Philip Smith at Carling Dalenson and Mats Persson at Galleri Jan Wallmark.

At Sergels torg, exhibitions, workshops and performances are presented, including Süperstar Orkestar. Younger artist-run initiatives are also well represented, including an exhibition with 25 Konstfack students as well as Parallel Collective with an opening night.

Several galleries in Östermalm and in the gallery cluster around Hudiksvallsgatan host an open Gallery Breakfast Tour on Saturday. Private home exhibitions are presented by Misschiefs in Vasastan and Eva Livijn in Östermalm, alongside artist talks at institutions and galleries across the city. Guided tours are offered at, among others, Artipelag, Bonniers Konsthall, Konsthall 16, Kulturhuset Stadsteatern, The Cell, Fotografiska, Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde, Accelerator, Konstakademien, Prinsessan Estelles skulpturpark and Hospitalet.

– Stockholm Art Week is an opportunity to experience the entire city’s art scene within one week – from museums and established galleries to artist-run initiatives and temporary projects in the urban space. Our hope is that visitors will attend at least one art fair and discover additional exhibitions, perhaps at a museum or gallery they have not previously visited, says Joanna Sundström, founder of Stockholm Art Week.

During the week, a collaboration between Porsche and the artist Anders Krisár will also be presented, featuring a specially designed Art Car. A Day’s March launches a tote bag as well as Stockholm Art Week’s official overshirt, developed together with the artist Rugiyatou Ylva Jallow in collaboration with Mack Art Foundation.

Stockholm Art Week has established itself as a central meeting place for artists, curators, collectors and audiences, and each spring contributes to positioning Stockholm as an international destination for contemporary art.
