Stockholm Art Week 2024 14 - 19 May
This year's edition of Stockholm Art Week will be inaugurated by the Mayor of Stockholm and includes over 60 participants and up to 150 program activities.
Stockholm Art Week has a strong international focus and welcomes Europe's art weeks and weekends through the new international network, The Spider. The acclaimed artist Vaginal Davis will take over Stockholm's art scene at Moderna Museet, Nationalmuseum, Accelerator, and Index. Market Art Fair returns to Liljevalchs and Spritmuseum, presenting 47 galleries and over 100 artists. Fotografiska will hold the opening of an exhibition featuring Jeff Cowen, Hospitalet reopens after a year of renovation, and Sergels torg will host art, performances, and site-specific installations. Konstnärshuset will open two exhibitions, and a performance will take place at Norra bantorget. These are just a few highlights of Stockholm Art Week 2024.
Inauguration
Stockholm Art Week opens on May 14th at 3:30 pm with a speech by the Mayor of Stockholm, Karin Wanngård. The opening on Skeppsholmen coincides with the presentation of a performance program by Statens Konstråd. Speakers at the opening include Henrik Orrje, Acting Director of the Swedish Arts Council, and Joanna Sundström, initiator of Stockholm Art Week. In the evening, the art collective IntraGalactic will present a performance program, and the digital publication and archive "Viaduktens avsked" will be launched.
Vaginal Davis
The Icon Vaginal Davis comes to Stockholm, and her solo exhibition "Magnificent Product", initiated by Moderna Museet, spans across several institutions, each approaching Davis's artistry from different angles. Moderna Museet, Nationalmuseum, Accelerator, Index – The Swedish Contemporary Art Foundation, Tensta konsthall, and MDT (Moderna Dansteatern).
The Spider
New this year is an international collaboration with art weeks and art weekends in Europe - The Spider. Despite Taylor Swift's three concerts in Stockholm making it difficult to find hotel rooms, visitors from Amsterdam Art Week, Berlin Art Week, Prague Art Week, Vienna Art Week, Stockholm Art Week, London Gallery Weekend, and Barcelona Gallery Weekend are expected.
Market Art Fair
Northern Europe's leading contemporary art fair, Market Art Fair, takes place from May 17th to 19th at Liljevalchs and Spritmuseum on Djurgården in Stockholm. Market Art Fair includes 47 galleries this year, showcasing over 100 artists. This year, Swedish stars such as Marie-Louise Ekman, Cecilia Edefalk, and Jacob Dahlgren, as well as Nordic and international artists such as John Kørner, Ursula Reuter, Isabella Ducrot, and Matt Belk, will be featured.
Sergels Torg
Sergels torg, located in the heart of Stockholm, will be filled with art, performances, and site-specific installations. The initiative on Sergels torg is a collaboration with Stockholm City, property owners, and citizens. Artist Arianna E. Funk will fill the square with parasols, Jenny Norberg will create a large-scale chessboard, and the group exhibition "Hot Box" by Konstfack's first-year students will be presented. Grafikens Hus will conclude with Yasmina Karli Malmsten's exhibition, and in addition to this, there will be a concert with Vera Vinter and Hanna Ekström, and on Saturday, there will be a Serbian folk dance festival.
Fotografiska
Fotografiska will open an extensive exhibition featuring Jeff Cowen on May 17th. The exhibition "Berlin Works" provides a representative overview of the period between 2007 and 2023 when Cowen moved his studio and photo lab from Paris to the Kreuzberg district in Berlin, where his unique visual language underwent a period of intense development. The exhibition is curated by Ellen K. Willas. Cowen will also hold a Masterclass with Knut Koivisto.
Konstnärshuset
Konstnärshuset will open two exhibitions on May 16th. Firstly, the multigenerational group exhibition in the Main Gallery featuring photographers Ekaterina Lukoshkova, Trinidad Carillo, and sculptor Barbro Hedström, curated by Alida Ivanov and Ashik Zaman, and secondly, a solo exhibition in the Upper Gallery by artist Ingvild Hovland Kaldal.
Goethe-Institut
At the Goethe-Institut, the exhibition "The Joan Arcs" showcases the works of three artists: Felix Vasquez Aguilera, Hannes Michanek, and Marta Galindo (all new names on the Stockholm art scene), who were inspired by Didion's writings in their creative processes.
Hospitalet
The old mental asylum Hospitalet in Danvikstull reopens after an extensive renovation with an exhibition by the Swiss New York-based artist Yves Scherer. The exhibition, presented by Carl Kostyál, features 12 artworks based on photographs of Kate Moss taken by Mario Sorrenti, as well as other sculptural works. In June, Hospitalet will host Gullringsbo Egendomar's permanent art collection.
Gallery Tour
On Saturday May 18th, a gallery tour will be organized by several prominent galleries in Östermalm: Saskia Neuman Gallery, Andréhn-Schiptjenko, Public Service, and Dalenson Gallery. Galleries on Hudiksvallsgatan will be open, and Galerie Nordenhake will open a solo exhibition featuring Cecilia Edefalk.
Afripedia Art
The platform Afripedia will organize a group exhibition featuring Anton Isaksson with his collective Betan Inc and Liban Abshir Mohammed at Alma.
Antics
The newly opened gallery Antics on Hudiksvallsgatan 8 will present a group exhibition featuring Channa Bianca, Saskia Holmkvist, Sam Pulitzer, and Carla-Luisa Reuter. Additionally, the gallery will organize a book fair and programs at Liljevalchs and Spritmuseum during Market Art Fair.
Bonniers Konsthall
On May 15th, Bonniers Konsthall will host a talk on the situation of women's rights and queer activists worldwide with Petra Tötterman-Andorff, Woman to Woman; Daniel Poohl, Expo; and Elias Fjellander, RFSL Ungdom. Moderator: Lovisa Fhager Logothetis, Secretary-General of the Bonnier Family Foundation. The program is presented in collaboration with the Bonnier Family Foundation. Bonniers Konsthall will also exhibit "Requiem for Eva-Britt" by Markus Öhrn.
Carl Eldhs Ateljémuseum
Carl Eldhs Ateljémuseum will present a new exhibition featuring artist Malin Gabriella Nordin.
Ed-art x Dahl Agenturer
During the week, Dahl Agenturer will be filled with art by artists such as Ditte Ejlerskov and Astrid Sylwan, along with new talents like Mehregan Meysami and Thomas Hansson. All works are created using various printmaking techniques.
Galleri Duerr
On May 19th, Galleri Duerr will host a conversation between curator Jonatan Habib Engqvist and artist Madeleine Hatz. Until May 18th, two solo exhibitions by Tove Mauritzson and Linn Sjöstedt will also be on display.
PREKS
In May, PREKS presents Giuseppe Penone as its artist of the year 2024. Penone has created a site-specific work for Prinsessan Estelles Skulpturpark on Kungliga Djurgården, inaugurated on May 30th by HRH Prince Daniel. Journalists are welcome to a press preview of Giuseppe Penone's new work and a presentation of the foundation's program on May 15th from 12:00-13:00.
Saskia Neuman Gallery
Saskia Neuman presents works by Jonas Lipps in the exhibition "Good Fences" until May 18th. The gallery also participates in a breakfast gallery tour on Östermalm on May 18th, together with Andréhn-Schiptjenko, Carling Dalenson, and Public Service.
Stockholm Art Events
On May 17th and 18th, ZineFest will be held at A House - A Stage, an evening celebrating visual, installation, and performance art.
Åmells
During the week, Åmells presents new works by Oskar Korsárs in the exhibition "Reflections on Styx". The exhibition marks Korsárs debut at Åmells and reintroduction to the Swedish art scene.
Beau Travail
Beau Travail gallery at Skånegatan 108 presents the exhibition "This Way, Paris" by artist Behzad Dehno, consisting of conceptual paintings showing the way to Paris.
Artipelag
For the first time in Sweden, the Belgian artist Berlinde De Bruyckere is showcased in a major solo exhibition at Artipelag. During Stockholm Art Week, Artipelag offers reduced admission to De Bruyckere's exhibition "No Life Lost".
Konsthall 16
Konsthall 16 presents a performance in conjunction with Alexandra Larsson Jacobson's exhibition "We Play, I Push, You Hold, We Fall". The event is organized together with Selma City Spa and takes place in the rooftop pool at Clarion Hotel Sign on May 15th.
Art Talk True Love at Soho House Stockholm
At Soho House, the talk True Love (about the relationship between art and commerce) will take place on May 15th. Panelists include Sanna Strömbäck from Porsche, Mia Sundberg from Spritmuseum / Absolut Art Collection, journalist and author Karolina Modig, and Tinni Ernsjö Rappe, art director at the Stockholm School of Economics. The discussion is moderated by Stockholm Art Week's founder, Joanna Sundström.
