The FIA International World Rally Championship in Umeå starts tomorrow. On Wednesday evening, the world's best rally drivers line up in Rådhustorget, ready for the long-awaited rally event.
Umeå is preparing to welcome the world's top rally drivers and the long-awaited WRC- rally. Perfect conditions will frame the magically winter-enveloped stretches around Umeå, Brattby, Vännäs, Bygdsiljum, Västervik, Norrby, Sarsjöliden, and Floda.
The Norrland forests around Umeå have received a generous amount of snow during the winter, which has resulted in a snow depth of 50-60 centimeters out in the woodlands. The winter roads, formed since the first snow fell last fall, offer a challenging terrain for the competitors.
Unlike previous years, Umeå has, thanks to a combination of a cold winter with sub-zero temperatures and relatively few days of mild weather, created perfect conditions for the rally sport. The roads have a solid ice floor, which, together with the sharp snow, creates an excellent balance between speed and technical skill.
- Weather and wind are, of course, just like in any winter sport, a significant factor in rallying. The previous two years the competition has been held in Umeå, there has been plenty of snow with fantastic support from the sun. Ahead of this year's Rally Sweden, I dare to promise almost perfect sporting conditions that will be technically challenging for the drivers, says Joakim Åström, Route manager, Rally Sweden.
