Welshman Elfyn Evans ended friday evening at Rally Sweden in a leading position, 2.5 seconds ahead of Estonian and Hyundai driver Takamota Katsuta and Ott Tänak .
In fourth place is the Belgian Thierry Neuville, 9.1 seconds behind Evans, and in fifth place, Kalle Rovanperä struggles with his Toyota, a full 25.5 seconds behind.
When we review the first eight stages, Evans has been strong all day. He won two of the eight stages and was second on three of Friday's stages.
Rally Sweden's first real challenge, the crucial Friday opening, turned into a beehive with relatively few mistakes from the WRC 1 drivers. However, the icy surface occasionally slowed the cars down when braking points weren't always calculated correctly on the tricky surface.
When Red Barn Arena closed for the evening, the top five drivers were within a time interval of nine (!) seconds. Takamoto Katsuta was in second place, followed by Ott Tänak, Adrien Fourmaux, and Thierry Neuville.
As in previous years, Friday's seven special stages in the hilly forest and winter landscapes of Västerbotten were the same magical public celebration.
The newly added stages Andersvattnet, with one of the competition's most spectacular jumps, and the E4-adjacent village of Bäck offered rally entertainment at its best. On Valentine's Day, which was celebrated in Sweden on Friday, the audience showed their love by forming a symbolic heart of snowmobiles.
