KMH, Valhallavägen 105 i Stockholm, sal 1D220

"During two excursions to the island of Crete in 2011 and 2014, organized by the Institute for Musicology at the University of Vienna, several hundred hours of audiovisual material, along with a rich set of notes, were collected. Driven by the enthusiasm of the participants, and motivated by the editors' background of long years of field work in Crete, we decided that this rich set of materials should be presented to a larger public. Our goal was to present a collection of texts that should provide an overview of some of the most important subjects of Cretan music. Now, six years after the first excursion, we are finally able to present this collection to the public. I contains 14 texts by 12 authors in English and German language that cover a wide range of aspects of Cretan music, and is accompanied by a website with many audiovisual examples.

In my presentation, I will give a short overview of Cretan music, presenting some of the aspects covered by the texts in the book and by my own research on Cretan music. Traditional music in Crete is a thriving activity that is present both in rural and urban environments in Crete. Especially in the summer months, when many Cretans who migrated to the urban centers in and outside of Crete move temporarily to their home villages, the number of festivities that include music activities can hardly be counted. These activities include all age and social groups, and offer an important opportunity to enact and renegotiate the fluent definitions of identities based on gender, age, social status and place of origin. My presentation as well as our book aim at motivating researchers and interested travelers to discover these activities that evolve around music in Crete."
