Kazakhstan reform process continues, with fresh elections announced. And President Tokayev meets with senior EU and UN leaders.

This press release presents an overview of significant events over the past week in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

1) An important event of the outgoing week is the participation of Mr. Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, at the General Debate of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly.
The President described the current era as one of “geopolitical confrontation,” characterized by greater chaos and unpredictability than heretofore.
– “The long-standing international system - based on order and responsibility is giving way to a new, more chaotic and unpredictable one. The global system of checks and balances has failed to maintain peace and stability. The security architecture is eroding. Mutual distrust between global powers is dangerously deepening. The world is falling prey to a new set of military conflicts. For the first time in two generations, we face the prospect of the use of nuclear weapons, and not even as a last resort," the President said.

2) While attending the UN General Assembly in New York, the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan held a meeting with the top officials of international organizations and heads of state.
On the sidelines of the global summit on food security, the Head of State met with Charles Michel, President of the European Council and with the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.
The sides considered the prospects for strengthening the strategic partnership between Kazakhstan and the European Union, paying special attention to the development of political dialogue and expansion of trade and economic cooperation.

3) The program of Kassym-Jomart Tokayev's visit to New York ended with discussions with UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
During the meeting, held in a constructive and friendly atmosphere, the parties discussed the state and prospects of strengthening multilateral cooperation between Kazakhstan and the UN.
The parties also reviewed the implementation of President Tokayev’s initiative to create a UN Hub for Sustainable Development Goals for Central Asia and Afghanistan in Almaty. The UN Secretary-General expressed support for this important initiative.

4) Kazakhstan to Hold Presidential Elections on November 20
President Tokayev called for extraordinary presidential elections during his Sept.1 State-of-the-Nation Address.
“A new trust mandate of the people is needed for the successful implementation of fundamental and comprehensive reforms on the way to creating a fair Kazakhstan,” Tokayev explained his decision.
In addition to this, he proposed to extend the presidential term from five to seven years with no permission to be re-elected. Tokayev signed the decree approving these amendments to the country’s Constitution on Sept. 17.

5) Kazakhstan Set to Return "Astana" as Name of Its Capital
The adoption of a package of constitutional amendments, which also include a norm for a single seven-year presidential term, comes just a day after the capital city’s maslikhat (local representative bodies) convened for a public hearing on Sept. 15 and backed the proposal that came a few weeks earlier from a group of the national parliament’s deputies.

President Tokayev had agreed to restore the former name of the country’s capital just three years after he proposed to rename it in recognition of the special role of the outgoing president Nursultan Nazarbayev, one of his first moves upon taking office in March 2019 when Nazarbayev unexpectedly stepped down.
