Väderstad, one of the world’s leading companies in tillage, seeding and planting, has released an online seed rate calculator for everyone to use. In the calculator farmers can easily find their correct seed rate for their specific crop, as well as convert between seed volume and seed population.

The new seed rate calculator is available through Vaderstad.com but can also easily be used on mobile devices like a phone or iPad in field. In the calculator it’s possible to either target the actual seed rate in kg/ha (seed volume) or the target seed rate of yielding plants in the field, measured as plants/m2 (seed population).

Nine commonly used crops are available in the calculator, where standard values for thousand kernel weight and germination rate are already prefilled. You can also manually enter all the values for your specific seeds, which are normally depicted on the seed bag.

It’s also possible to enter values for projected losses and effects on germination because of factors like weather, conditions in the field and pests. Finally, you enter the size of the field in hectares.

When all data has been entered, you get a calculated seed rate. In the calculator it’s also possible to switch between the metric and imperial system, depending on where in the world you are.
