Tamron continues to expand its Nikon Z lineup with the 20-40mm F2.8 Di III VXD, a compact zoom that pairs an ultra-wide 20mm starting point with a constant F2.8 aperture. The lens is already well established in its Sony E-mount version and is now available for Nikon Z.

Designed as a flexible everyday lens, the 20-40mm F2.8 covers a useful range from ultra-wide to a more natural perspective. At 20 mm, it is well suited to landscapes, architecture, interiors, travel and video, while the 40 mm end works naturally for street photography, everyday snapshots and portraits. On APS-C cameras, the lens provides an angle of view corresponding to approximately 30-60 mm on full frame.

A compact F2.8 zoom for everyday use

One of the key ideas behind the 20-40mm F2.8 is to offer the brightness of a constant F2.8 zoom without the size normally associated with this type of lens. The Nikon Z version measures 88.7 mm in length and weighs just 380 g, making it easy to carry as an everyday lens for both photography and video.

The wide 20 mm starting point also makes the lens particularly useful for handheld video and vlogging. Its compact design works well with camera grips and smaller gimbals, while the lens changes length by only 9.2 mm during zooming, helping maintain a more consistent balance.

Autofocus is powered by Tamron's VXD linear motor system, providing fast and precise focusing for both still photography and video. The quiet operation is also beneficial when recording video in environments where unwanted mechanical noise should be kept to a minimum.

Close focusing and refined optical performance

The optical construction consists of 12 elements in 11 groups, including four LD elements, two GM aspherical elements and one hybrid aspherical element. Tamron's BBAR-G2 coating helps suppress ghosting and flare while maintaining contrast in challenging lighting conditions.

At 20 mm, the lens can focus as close as 0.17 m and reaches a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.8. This makes it possible to photograph small subjects at close range while still including the surrounding environment, creating a distinctive wide-angle close-up perspective. The lens uses a 67 mm filter thread and features moisture-resistant construction together with a fluorine coating on the front element. It is also compatible with Tamron Lens Utility for additional customisation of selected lens functions.
