Where Service Meets Community: How Mike Silsby Builds Lasting Connections

Driver Mike Silsby

For nearly a decade, Mike Silsby has done more than serve customers across the Jamestown, NY area. As a driver at Casella's Jamestown Hauling Division, he has built meaningful relationships through simple acts of kindness, consistency, and genuine care for the people on his route.

Known for waving to children waiting for the school bus and taking time to connect with customers, Mike believes his role is about more than collecting waste.

"I love meeting people and interacting with my customers," Mike said. "It's the people that make the job rewarding."

One interaction, in particular, left a lasting impression. After noticing a customer's child struggling with the transition to school, Mike took a moment to offer encouragement to the boy's mother during a difficult morning.

To Mike, it was a small gesture. To the family, it meant much more.

In the months that followed, their son eagerly watched for Mike's truck each collection day, waving excitedly as it arrived. The bond became so meaningful that the family later recognized Mike in a published children's book for the positive impact he had on their lives.

"It's something I'll never forget," Mike said.

Moments like that reinforce what Mike values most about his work.

"I just want to be a good role model and do something positive for the community," he said. "It makes me feel good knowing I can make someone's day a little better."

After nearly ten years with Casella, Mike credits the relationships he's built for shaping his perspective.

"They've taught me respect," he said. "They've shown me how important it is to treat people well."

While Mike insists he's simply doing his job, the families who look forward to seeing him each week would likely disagree. Through kindness, reliability, and a genuine commitment to others, Mike demonstrates that exceptional service is ultimately about creating connections that leave a lasting impact.
