Transcontinenta Group, distributor for Nocpix Nature in the Benelux, introduces the Rovex. This is a lightweight, large-screen handheld thermal imaging camera built for birdwatchers, wildlife observers, and nature enthusiasts to discover birds and other wildlife more easily in challenging viewing conditions.

Rovex combines a 5-inch touchscreen, wide-field thermal imaging, and AI-assisted tracking in a lightweight handheld design. It is intended as a search tool rather than a replacement for binoculars, spotting scopes, or cameras. When low light, dense vegetation, poor weather, or complex surroundings make animals difficult to see, Rovex shows users where to look. Once an animal or bird is located, users can switch to their regular optics for closer observation and identification. The open-screen design also changes the way thermal imaging can be used in the field. Users can scan while walking and remain aware of their surroundings instead of looking continuously through an eyepiece. The large display is eyeglass-friendly and allows several people to see the thermal image at the same time.

A larger view for faster wildlife discovery

Finding wildlife is often the first challenge. Rovex's 5-inch 1280 × 720 touchscreen and 17.5° × 13.1° field of view allow users to scan a broader area with each sweep while viewing thermal information on a large, open display. This can be particularly useful around woodland, reed beds, grass, shrubs, and other dense cover, where a bird or other warm-blooded animal may be present but difficult to see. Thermal imaging gives nature observers another way to find potential wildlife activity before using binoculars, a spotting scope, or a camera for closer observation.

The large screen also makes wildlife discovery easier to share. Rather than limiting the thermal view to one person looking through an eyepiece, Rovex allows companions, workshop participants, families, or groups on a nature excursion to look at the same screen and see where an animal has been found.

AI-assisted search and tailored viewing modes

Rovex's AI Smart Tracking analyses the thermal image and highlights likely targets with coloured frames, directing the user's attention to areas of interest. A red frame indicates a high-probability target above 70%, while an orange frame indicates a potential target between 40% and 70%. The AI tool assists with searching rather than identifying bird or animal species. It shows you where to look first, so you spend less time scanning areas where no potential animal has been detected.

To support different outdoor conditions, Rovex offers Standard, Rain & Fog, and Birding display modes. Standard Mode balances the thermal scene for everyday nature observation. Birding Mode emphasises potential targets while suppressing cooler background noise, so birds stand out in woods, bushes, reeds, and grass. Rain & Fog Mode is intended for adverse weather and high-humidity conditions, where thermal contrast can become more difficult to read.

Thermal imaging when nature gets harder to see

Wildlife often becomes most interesting just when conventional observation becomes more difficult. Birds may disappear among branches and leaves, animals can remain hidden in grass or shrubs, and fading daylight makes visual searching increasingly challenging.

The Rovex uses a 384 × 288 @ 12μm thermal sensor with NETD ≤25mK and a 15mm F0.8 large-aperture lens. The camera combines its hardware with Nocpix Nature R+ Super-Resolution, Smart Image Denoising, and Smart Target Highlighting. These processing technologies reveal more thermal detail, reduce distracting background noise, and make heat sources easier to distinguish in complex natural surroundings.

In the field, that means the Rovex picks up something as small as a squirrel or great spotted woodpecker from up to 90 metres away.

Built for the outdoors

Rovex weighs less than 290g without the battery and measures 135 × 70 × 182mm, making it compact and easy to carry during extended field use. It features a metal frame with a rubberised grip, IP66 water and dust protection, and is drop-resistant up to one metre. A protective lens cap safeguards the optics when not in use. 

The device uses a replaceable 21700 Li-ion battery, delivering up to four hours of operation. The large touchscreen provides direct access to imaging and menus, while physical buttons allow quick control of key functions such as power, photo, and video capture for simple field operation.

Smartphone app for fast and easy image sharing

The smartphone app enables real-time image display and remote operation from a mobile device. Once a bird or other animal has been found, the thermal view can be shown to companions, captured, and shared. The Rovex includes 64GB of internal storage for photos and videos. Through the wireless app connection, the stored images and videos can be transferred to a mobile device for sharing or posting on social media. The app can also be used to update Rovex firmware wirelessly.
