Boston Event Spreads Battery Safety Awareness

Batteries being collected and recovered safely

On July 22, in partnership with the National Waste and Recycling Association, ReSource Waste Services, and the Boston Fire Department, Casella helped host a battery take-back event in the Boston neighborhood of West Roxbury, MA, which brought together residents, industry partners, municipal officials, and safety advocates around a simple but important goal: keeping batteries out of the trash.

During the event, approximately 1,000 pounds of batteries were collected for safe recycling and proper management. Just as importantly, volunteers and organizers had dozens of meaningful conversations with community members about the growing importance of battery safety and why batteries should never be placed in household trash or recycling bins.

Every battery collected represents one less potential fire risk in collection trucks, recycling facilities, and waste processing operations, while helping recover valuable materials for reuse. The batteries collected will be shipped through the Battery Network, sorted, and processed to recover as much of the recyclable material as possible.

The event is another reminder that small actions can have a significant impact on public safety, environmental stewardship, and protecting the workers who keep our communities clean.
