NextGen FDM: Intuitive Innovation in Digital Rear Vision

Gentex NextGen FDM Display in action while backing up.

A glance in the rearview mirror is one of the most natural actions in driving. It’s where drivers check awareness of their surroundings, judge distances, and make split-second decisions that impact the safety of passengers and passersby.

But what drivers see in a traditional mirror has always been limited.

In 2016, Gentex introduced the Full Display Mirror (FDM), an intelligent rear-vision system that uses a custom camera and mirror-integrated video display to provide an unobstructed digital view of the road behind the vehicle—all integrated into the rearview mirror already familiar to drivers. The system helps eliminate common visual obstructions such as headrests, passengers, and vehicle pillars while providing a wider field of view.

FDM features bimodal functionality. It functions as a standard auto-dimming mirror, but with the flip of a switch, drivers can move between a traditional reflected view and an unobstructed digital view of the road behind the vehicle—giving them the flexibility to choose the view that best fits their preference or driving situation.

NextGen FDM is the highest-performing FDM Gentex has ever made—delivering sharper visuals, smarter features, and an even more intuitive rearward view that works in harmony with the way drivers actually see the road.

The Problem

A traditional rearview mirror is only as effective as the view behind it. Passengers, headrests, luggage, C- and D-pillars, and increasingly smaller—or even nonexistent—rear windows can obstruct or significantly limit a driver’s field of view.

The Solution

Gentex NextGen FDM installed in a vehicle.

Gentex developed the Full Display Mirror to overcome these limitations, using a rear-facing camera to provide drivers with a wider, unobstructed view of the road behind the vehicle. Since launching the first Full Display Mirror in 2016, Gentex has continued to advance digital rear vision.

NextGen FDM

NextGen FDM builds on that leadership with meaningful advancements that integrate seamlessly into the driving experience.

The system combines a high-performance display, next-generation camera technology, and intelligent software to create a clearer, more lifelike view behind the vehicle:

  • High-resolution display (205 ppi): Crisp, sharp imagery with no compromise in detail—even in compact cabins and at closer viewing distances.
  • Enhanced color and contrast: A more natural, high-contrast image that improves visibility in a variety of conditions.
  • Slimmer design and larger active area: Thin borders and refined LCD technology maximize what drivers can see at a glance.

The new hardware and software allow drivers to always see the right things at the right time with NextGen FDM.

Higher pixel density in the display and optimized processing provide more sharpness, contrast and color saturation. Thanks to an updated 4K wide-angle camera feed, the mirror can display the most relevant portion of the rearward view from the vehicle. In-camera processing seamlessly adjusts the image to create an as-expected view for drivers.

Instead of presenting a static image, the new display dynamically adapts to driving conditions to better match how drivers naturally interpret their surroundings:

Dynamic View Adjustment

The camera view automatically adapts to vehicle speed to provide the most useful perspective for the driving situation.

At lower speeds, the view expands to increase awareness of nearby surroundings, pedestrians, and other potential hazards. As speed increases, the view gradually transitions to a more focused perspective, helping create a calmer and more comfortable viewing experience.

The adjustment happens seamlessly in the background, allowing drivers to simply look in the mirror and maintain awareness of their surroundings.

Reverse Assist

When the vehicle is shifted into reverse, NextGen FDM automatically adjusts to provide better visibility of the area immediately behind the vehicle. By subtly shifting the camera's perspective downward and maximizing its field of view, Reverse Assist helps drivers maintain awareness of the space surrounding the vehicle while maneuvering.

Complementing the vehicle's backup camera, Reverse Assist provides additional visibility and context beyond the close-range camera view, helping drivers maintain awareness of their surroundings while reversing.

Blind Spot Alert and Lane Change Assist

When the vehicle detects another vehicle in an adjacent lane, a warning indicator can be displayed in the NextGen FDM, placing critical information directly in the driver's line of sight.

For additional visibility during lane change maneuvers, the FDM can display an inset view from the wide-angle rear camera, providing additional context alongside the vehicle and helping drivers better assess surrounding traffic before changing lanes.

Truck Bed View

NextGen FDM's ultra-wide field of view and advanced image processing can deliver visibility of both the truck bed and the roadway behind the vehicle from a single rear-facing camera.

By enabling one camera to perform functions that often require multiple cameras, the system can simplify vehicle architecture while preserving driver visibility.

While innovative technology can feel disruptive and have a learning curve, NextGen FDM is designed to feel familiar and seamless for all drivers. Drivers simply look at the mirror and see more.

Critical information is presented naturally, without unnecessary complexity.

Adjustments to the camera view are automatic, based on what the vehicle is doing, and happen in the background.

And additional available features, such as DVR capability, Wi-Fi connectivity, and HomeLink, bring a wide range of functions into a single, streamlined system.

The Experience

NextGen FDM is a jump forward in digital vision technology. Even as the highest-performing full display mirror Gentex has ever made, it enhances driver awareness without demanding attention.

The combination of new features and updated technology create a seamless experience for the driver. There is no more glancing around the cabin for distance signals and warnings, dynamic adjustments make it easy for drivers to have an optimal rearward view, and everything is placed right where drivers naturally look: at the rear-view mirror.

NextGen FDM sets the pace for digital rear vision systems, providing a superior, and intuitive, driving experience.
