Nord-Lock’s production facility in Mattmar, Sweden has officially transitioned to biopropane – a renewable fuel produced from feedstocks like plant waste – reducing its Scope 1 emissions by 99.9%.
The official transition was completed on earlier this year, and means the factory’s Scope 1 emissions (those generated directly from fuel combustion) drop from 190 tons of CO2e per year to only 0.26 tons of CO2e per year.
The adoption of biopropane by Nord-Lock is an important contribution towards the science-based targets for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions which all companies in Nord-Lock Group have committed to. This includes a 58.8% reduction in absolute scope 1, scope 2 and scope 3 emissions by 2034, and a 100% reduction by 2050.
The change of fuel source is the latest in a series of sustainability investments at Nord-Lock’s Mattmar facility. In addition to replacing fossil propane, the site is powered by 100% renewable electricity, predominantly hydropower, further reducing its overall carbon footprint.
With biopropane offering the same performance and reliability as previously used fuel sources at a dramatically lower carbon footprint, Nord-Lock is able to maintain the same high quality and operational stability customers depend on while also drastically cutting greenhouse gas emissions – a win-win outcome for all.
"The transition to biopropane is a significant step in lowering our carbon footprint and a key milestone in reaching our sustainability goals. We are constantly seeking solutions that cut emissions while maintaining our product performance. Achieving a 99.9% reduction in our factory’s Scope 1 emissions without impacting production is an excellent example of this approach," says Graham Souter, Vice President BU Nord-Lock.
Anna Sjöberg, Nord-Lock Group Quality & Sustainability Manager, adds: “The successful execution of our Mattmar facility's switch to biopropane is strong confirmation that Nord-Lock Group's sustainability roadmap is having a timely, positive impact on reducing emissions from our day-to-day operations, and is delivering clear and meaningful results.”
