LiFT-PV shifts technological direction, HyET Solar production line available to international market

Arnhem, 9 April – An advanced production line for flexible solar film in Arnhem is becoming available to the international market. The reason is a technological change of direction by LiFT-PV, which is focusing on a different technology. The existing line, stemming from earlier developments within HyET Solar, is being offered to international parties through an online auction.

Specialised technology for flexible applications

The production line in Arnhem was developed for the manufacture of flexible thin-film solar foil: lightweight solar solutions that can be applied in buildings, vehicles and other integrated applications where weight, flexibility and form factor play an important role.

The technology builds on years of development within HyET Solar and later LiFT-PV. As such, the line represents a specialised segment within the European solar industry, where competition is not based on scale or volume, but on technological differentiation and application-focused design.

A familiar challenge within the European solar industry

At the same time, the case illustrates a broader reality within the European solar industry. While Europe is strong in innovation, materials development and specialised solar applications, the step from technology development to profitable scale-up often proves difficult in practice.

Particularly in capital-intensive segments, production costs, financing requirements and international pricing pressure remain determining factors. This applies not only to conventional solar manufacturing, but also to specialised technologies such as thin-film and integrated PV solutions.

The European Commission is seeking to strengthen this position, including through the Net-Zero Industry Act, which is intended to contribute to a more robust European manufacturing industry for clean energy technologies. At the same time, the market shows that technological quality alone does not automatically lead to sustainable production at industrial scale.

Existing line available for redeployment

As a result of LiFT-PV’s technological shift, existing production infrastructure is now becoming available to parties that are active in this technological field or wish to expand within it. It concerns an operational production line with relevance for market players in thin-film technology, flexible PV and other integrated solar energy applications.

For parties working on the further development, industrialisation or redeployment of this type of technology, the availability of an existing line offers a concrete starting point. Instead of having to start a development trajectory from scratch, an already established production environment is becoming available within a specialist technological segment.

Broader pattern in cleantech and advanced manufacturing

The development in Arnhem is not an isolated case. In recent times, production assets from the solar, battery and broader cleantech sectors have come onto the market in various parts of Europe as a result of restructurings, downscaling or strategic changes in direction. Previously, assets from, among others, the solar and battery sectors have also been brought to market through Troostwijk Auctions, including those from Solarclarity and Northvolt.

This underlines a broader tension within Europe’s energy transition: much of the technology development takes place in Europe, but the conditions required to scale up production sustainably and competitively remain fragile. Precisely for that reason, existing production lines, specialised installations and built-up infrastructure are gaining new relevance for international market parties.
