The Swedish government has proposed changes to EU feed legislation that would allow recycled phosphorus from sewage sludge ash to be used in animal feed. If adopted, this step could pave the way for large-scale phosphorus recycling across the EU, reducing reliance on imports from Russia.
“This decision from Sweden sends a strong signal to Europe. It shows that outdated rules should not stand in the way of circular solutions. By seizing this opportunity, the EU can replace dangerous import dependencies with safe, circular production – safeguarding food security, strengthening resilience, and ensuring that billions in green investments are made here in Europe, not elsewhere,” says Jan Svärd, EasyMining CEO.
Sweden and industry leaders argue that enabling safe, recycled phosphorus use would cut dependence on Russian imports, boost food security, and strengthen Europe’s circular economy.

Fact Box: What is Phosphorus?
Phosphorus is essential for all life and plays a key role in plant growth, making it vital for both mineral fertilisers and animal feed. In organic farming, it improves acidic soils and helps increase yields.
About Ash2Phos and RevoCaP
EasyMining have developed Ash2Phos, a technology that recovers over 90 percent of the phosphorus from incinerated sewage sludge ash. This enables Europe to replace imported, mined phosphorus with locally produced, high purity recycled phosphorus. The first Ash2Phos plants are being built in Helsingborg, Sweden, and Schkopau, Germany. The product is called RevoCaP. Calcium phosphate from sewage sludge ash, such as RevoCaP, was recently approved by the EU for use in organic farming. However, recycled phosphorus is still not allowed in animal feed within the EU due to outdated regulations from the BSE crisis.
EasyMining develops and implements sustainable industrial-scale processes that create true circularity. We convert elements from waste into essential nutrients for plant and animal growth. We are owned by Ragn-Sells Group, a privately held corporate group involved in waste management, environmental services, and recycling in Northern Europe. www.easymining.com
