Ricoh announces the GR IV, a pocket-sized successor to its acclaimed GR series, designed for street photographers and enthusiasts who demand quality and portability.
With the GR IV, Ricoh continues the GR series tradition of blending premium image quality with a truly pocketable form, making it an appealing tool for who value discretion and creative control. The new model introduces a number of internal and external upgrades while preserving the clean, minimalist design that has made earlier GR cameras popular.
The GR IV introduces a newly designed body that is compact, slim, and highly functional. It is even thinner than earlier GR models, and a sculpted rear thumb rest provides a secure, comfortable hold. Several buttons and dials have been repositioned, and the mode‑adjustment (ADJ) lever has been replaced with a dial to make operation simpler and more intuitive.
At the front, the GR IV carries a new GR LENS 18.3 mm F2.8 that pairs excellent optical performance with a slim profile. This lens preserves the 28 mm (35 mm‑equivalent) angle of view and F2.8 aperture of its predecessor, but a new seven‑element, five‑group construction now includes glass‑moulded aspherical elements, including a large‑diameter final element, and high‑refraction, low‑dispersion glass to provide edge‑to‑edge sharpness and high contrast while minimizing distortion and chromatic aberration.
Inside, a new back‑illuminated APS‑C‑size CMOS sensor works with the upgraded GR ENGINE 7 imaging engine to deliver better sensitivity and lower noise. With around 25.74 effective megapixels and improved image processing, it produces images rich in detail and tonal gradation. Ricoh’s original accelerator unit helps maintain a high signal‑to‑noise ratio and feeds the clean data to the engine, allowing the camera to reach a top ISO sensitivity of 204 800 for very high‑sensitivity shooting.
To minimize motion blur, the GR IV uses a five‑axis shake‑reduction mechanism that compensates for pitch, yaw and roll and even for shift during close‑up photography, reducing blur by up to six shutter steps. A redesigned lens barrel and optimised start‑up sequence cut the start‑up time to about 0.6 seconds, which is the fastest of any GR camera, and also reduce the time needed to enter Macro mode or to retract the lens. The high‑speed lens drive and fast sensor readout ensure quick focusing, while autofocus performance in low light and the precision and coverage of the image‑plane phase‑detection system have been enhanced to improve overall AF speed and accuracy.
Other new features include a Program Auto Ex function that lets you switch exposure modes instantly: turn the front e-dial for Aperture-priority AE, or the rear e-dial for Shutter-priority AE. A new Snap Distance Priority AE (Sn) mode has also been added, allowing images with an emphasized depth of field. Beyond the 12 existing Image Control effects, GR IV now offers a Cinema mode with selectable yellow or green tones to recreate the look of classic film.
To improve dust removal, an anti-stain, antistatic coating has been added to the UV/IR-cut filter in front of the sensor, working alongside the DR II ultrasonic vibration system. Images can be stored in the built-in 53 GB memory or on a microSD card.
