Did you know that the EU is still buying large quantities of phosphorus from Russian mines, despite the war in Ukraine?
In fact, during the first half of 2025, imports of phosphorus from Russian mines have even increased, according to our analysis.
“The EU is thus supporting the very dictatorship we are simultaneously trying to arm ourselves against and protect ourselves from. But not only that: we are handing over control of a nutrient essential to preventing the collapse of our food supply to Vladimir Putin,” write Anders Kihl, Pär Larshans, and Jan Svärd in this opinion piece in Dagens Nyheter.
And this is despite the fact that the solution lies beneath our feet. By recycling the phosphorus that flows through our sewage pipes, we can strengthen Sweden’s food security and cut off the flow of money to the Russian war chest. The technology exists – all that’s needed is the right decision.
