Seven restored Swedish, Danish and Norwegian film classics will premiere at the world’s largest heritage film festival, Il Cinema Ritrovato in Bologna. The film series “Norden Noir” marks the first joint Nordic initiative at the festival, the result of a deepened collaboration between the Nordic film institutes.

The classic film Flicka och hyacinter / Girl With Hyacinths (Hasse Ekman, 1950) and the digitally restored I dimma dold / In the Mist (Lars-Eric Kjellgren, 1953) will be screened at this year’s edition of Il cinema ritrovato in Bologna, the world’s finest film heritage festival. The films are included in the "Norden Noir" programme featuring seven noir films from the 1940s and 50s, which has been co-curated by the cinémathèques in Stockholm, Copenhagen and Oslo.

“To present Swedish films in Bologna is a great honour. From a film history perspective, it’s like being featured in the upper echelons of film festivals – much like Cannes. The festival’s focus on Nordic noir offers our archival films a new context, showing how relevant and vital our film heritage remains. This Nordic collaboration has been absolutely essential to making this happen. When we work across borders, between archives and cinematheques, our stories grow stronger. By preserving our shared film heritage, we can make it accessible to new generations, both in the Nordic countries and internationally” says Anna Croneman, CEO of the Swedish Film Institute.

In addition, Diagonalsymfoni / Symphonie diagonale (1925) by Viking Eggeling, will be featured in the “Cento anni fa: 1925” section, with live musical accompaniment by Matti Bye and Laura Naukkarinnen.

Also screened during the festival is the newly restored collective film O Regresso de Amílcar Cabral (made in Guinea-Bissau, 1976), in the “Cinema Libero” section. All source elements for the restoration comes from the collections of the Swedish Film Institute, and the digital restoration was carried out by the L’immagine ritrovata film laboratory in Bologna. One of the directors, Sana Na N’Hada, will introduce the film.

Il Cinema Ritrovato annually brings together visitors from archives and cinematheques around the world. The festival runs from 21 to 29 June. Discover more about the festival and the "Norden Noir" series.
