How did you get your start at Casella?
Moving to this area from Baltimore, MD, I recognized that there were not as many companies of the size I was used to. When I applied, Casella was already making such a large impact, and that was appealing to me. While I didn’t know much about the industry, I immediately knew this was where I wanted to be after touring facilities and seeing the work come to life. It was beyond anything I could have imagined.
What inspired you to pursue a career in sales?
My father thought I should pursue sales after I reconsidered zoology while at Clemson University. He thought my personality would be a natural fit since I’m so outgoing and persistent. As for this specific industry, it took a three-hour job interview with my future manager, Mike Casella, that really piqued my interest. Waste, who knew it could be so exciting? I love my job; I love my team. Some days are work boots while others are business suits. I never wanted a job where I was sitting behind a desk 24/7, I needed to be out in the community with people.
What do you enjoy most about working with your customers and businesses in Vermont?
I am now an even larger fan of coffee, beer, and ice cream, all thanks to some of my biggest food and beverage customers. In all honesty, and my biased opinion, I have the best customers. I work closely with various divisions, and they are such great teammates. We are always working to better our processes from specialty recycling to de-packaging, and it is fun to be a part of the solution.
How does your work in sales overlap or add to the work you do in your local community?
I frequently represent Casella in the local community, attending meetings or trade shows. So, when our partners see me out volunteering or frequenting their establishment during non-work hours, it goes far. From Green Up Day to painting fences, our division takes advantage of countless opportunities to get involved, which makes me proud.
What are some important lessons you have learned?
Every company has waste, but it’s how they handle it that really matters. Vermonters are a strong bunch that are environmentally grounded; the majority do well, while others need a little push or extra education at times, and I am happy to play that role.
