Ingrid Capacity, in collaboration with SEB Nordic Energy’s portfolio company Locus Energy, has officially broken ground on one of Finland’s largest battery energy storage system (BESS). Located in Nivala, the 70MW/140MWh project marks Ingrid Capacity’s first facility in Finland and a strategic milestone in its European expansion. Scheduled to go online in 2026, the system will support grid stability, enhance energy security, and accelerate Finland’s green energy transition.

The groundbreaking ceremony gathered local, national, and industry leaders

The groundbreaking marks a major milestone in the project’s development and brought together key figures from the Municipality of Nivala, transmission system operator Fingrid and other key stakeholders across the energy and political landscape.

“This groundbreaking is an important moment for Finland’s energy transition and a concrete step toward a more flexible, resilient, and decarbonized energy system,” said Jussi Jyrinsalo, Senior Vice President at Fingrid. “We welcome Ingrid Capacity and Locus Energy’s contribution to our shared mission of enabling a reliable and renewable-powered grid.”

“We’re proud to see construction begin in Nivala,” said Päivi Karikumpu, Mayor of Nivala. “This investment strengthens the local economy and significantly supports Finland’s broader energy goals. We look forward to continuing our close collaboration on this transformative project.”

Expanding a Successful Partnership

The Nivala project is the second large-scale collaboration between Ingrid Capacity and Locus Energy, following their 196MW/196MWh portfolio of projects currently under construction in southern Sweden (SE3 and SE4).

Different assets have different characteristics. Some offer baseload, some are intermittent and some can be regulated. Together with batteries a healthy mix can be created,” said Niklas Sörensen, Founding Partner, CEO & General Manager at Locus Energy. “This project reflects the growing synergy between energy storage and renewable generation. We’re excited to deepen our partnership with Ingrid Capacity in another key market.”

“We are thrilled to take the next step on this important project together with Locus Energy, said Nicklas Bäcker, Chief Strategy Officer at Ingrid Capacity.  “This is a major step in our mission to bring grid flexibility to the forefront of the energy transition. The cooperation with stakeholders - particularly the municipality of Nivala and Fingrid - has been excellent. We’re honored to contribute to Finland’s energy security and system stability.”

Intelligent Optimization through AI

The Nivala BESS will be operated using Ingrid Capacity’s proprietary AI-powered trading and optimization platform. The system makes real-time decisions to unlock maximum value—whether by stabilizing electricity prices, balancing the grid, or providing peak capacity to system operators.

Driving Grid Flexibility in Finland and across Europe

As Finland targets climate neutrality by 2035 and scales up wind power along its western coastline, grid pressure is intensifying - particularly following the country’s 2022 disconnection from the Russian grid. Grid-scale storage has become vital to ensuring a resilient energy system.

Developed in close collaboration with Fingrid and local authorities, the Nivala facility is part of Ingrid Capacity’s broader European strategy to deploy flexible infrastructure that unlocks grid capacity, supports electrification, and stabilizes electricity prices. This project reflects Ingrid Capacity’s vision for the energy system of tomorrow: flexible, resilient, cost-efficient, and fully decarbonized.
