Hand Picked: 18 Years of Dedication from Tom Jeffries

Picker Tom Jeffries

Rain, snow, or sunshine, laborer Tom Jeffries can be found scaling the hills of NCES Landfill in Bethlehem, NH. Tasked with one primary duty, to keep the facility clear of blowing litter and debris, Jeffries takes great pride in his contributions to providing a clean, safe, and efficient operation.

What does an average day look like for you?

I know this place like the back of my hand. I am out here no matter what the weather is picking. If there is work to be done, I am here. On a busy day, I could collect 10-20 bags of trash, and on a slow day, I lend a hand to the transfer station and maintenance team, load mattresses, or assist the operators. If someone needs help, they don’t have to tell me twice, I am on it.

Why is your role critical to landfill operations?

Keeping this place clean is a priority. It’s important work. I have been here for eighteen years. I do it for the company, and, most importantly, I do it for the community. I make sure it is done and done correctly. It feels good to know I am helping out.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

I love to be outside. I always keep myself moving and motivated. At my age, you just have to keep going and do it for yourself. I am proud of the work I do. We have an excellent team here.

What do you find most challenging about your job?

It isn’t hard work, but it’s tough work. You have to keep on top of it all day. Up and down the hills, all over. I have trained a few people over the years. Not everyone wants to do this kind of work. I have seen many people come in and try to do this job. It is not for everyone. But I like what I do. I didn’t have any formal training, just hands-on experience. I have learned a lot on the job and am still learning every day.
