Canadian demand highlights EasyMining’s phosphorus technology

Friesen Canadian Ambassador visit to EasyMining

Canadian feed producer Friesen Group is expanding its partnership with EasyMining, driven by growing demand for clean sustainable phosphorus. Ongoing trade tensions with the United States have made access to this vital resource a key food security concern.

Canada has no domestic phosphate mines and relies entirely on imports - mainly from the United States - for the production of fertilisers and animal feed. EasyMining’s Ash2Phos solution offers a way to reduce this dependency by extracting over 90% of the phosphorus from incinerated sewage sludge, producing a clean, safe, and circular alternative to mined phosphate.

"Secure access to phosphorus is becoming a global challenge, and Canada is taking that seriously. We're proud to contribute with a circular solution that reduces dependency on imports and strengthens food security,” says Jan Svärd, CEO of EasyMining.

During a recent visit to EasyMining’s facilities in Uppsala, representatives from Friesen Group, Canada’s Ambassador to Sweden Jason LaTorre, EasyMining, and parent company Ragn-Sells met to deepen the collaboration. In addition to deliveries from EasyMining’s upcoming Ash2Phos plants in Helsingborg, Sweden, and Schkopau, Germany, the parties are now exploring the possibility of building phosphorus recovery plants in Canada.

Unlike the EU, Canada does not ban the use of recycled phosphorus in animal feed, creating a faster path to implementation. The growing collaboration underscores how recycled phosphorus can become a key enabler of both food security and sustainable agriculture.

“To manufacture animal feed, we need phosphorus – but supply is uncertain, since a handful of countries control the world’s phosphate mines. Many deposits also contain high levels of hazardous heavy metals. Gaining access to clean, recycled phosphorus from domestic sewage is a fantastic opportunity for us,” says  Marvin Friesen, CEO of Frisen Group.
