Ragn-Sells shares insights on nitrogen in UK Parliament House of Lords

House of Lords session on nitrogen

On 12 March Ragn-Sells represented by Sustainability Director, Pär Larshans, shared knowledge during the UK Parliament House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee's inquiry into the efficient use of nitrogen.

Pär’s contribution focused on sharing the research and innovations underway at Ragn-Sells such as the nitrogen recovery solution, Aqua2N, a technology that captures nitrogen in a form that can be immediately used as fertilizer, creating a sustainable circular solution.

Pär also shared insights on other Ragn-Sells' innovations for phosphorous recovery (Ash2Phos) from sewage sludge and PFAS detoxification (SELPAXT), which were previously unknown to the committee and UK experts.

“Today’s wastewater treatment plants need to go from solely having an obligation to do ‘bad things less bad’ in our current linear economy, to become resource producers and detoxifiers in a future circular economy,” says Pär.

Additional key points from the discussion included:

  • The need for a holistic, system approach to reducing pollution, in collaboration with farmers and industry

  • Opportunities and innovations in wastewater treatment technologies to improve the removal and recovery of nitrogen

  • The role that upstream catchment solutions and bioresources play in the nitrogen cycle

  • Insights on the comparative regulatory direction of EU and English and Welsh regulation

In the session Pär was joined by wastewater experts David Johnson from The Rivers Trust and Mike Rose, CEO of UK Water Industry Research. The circular dimension was thoroughly covered and highlighted as the main solution to the challenges in the UK.

Ragn-Sells is committed to continue its work in supporting the industry through providing knowledge and best practices. A focus on transforming wastewater treatment plants into resource recovery plants can contribute to a sustainable and circular economy.

About EasyMining

EasyMining develops and implements sustainable industrial-scale processes that create true circularity. We convert elements from waste into essential nutrients for plant and animal growth. EasyMining is owned by Ragn-Sells Group, a privately held corporate group involved in waste management, environmental services, and recycling in Northern Europe.

About Chromafora

Chromafora is an innovative cleantech company with unique patented and patent-pending water treatment technologies based on proprietary chemistry: SELPAXT and SELMEXT. Both technologies focus on removing contaminants while reducing waste through selectivity. SELMEXT targets the removal of heavy metals, while SELPAXT eliminates both short- and long-chain PFAS substances from water streams. The SELMEXT process also contributes to the conservation of critical raw materials by enabling the recovery and recycling of valuable metals, such as gold and other precious resources, from waste.

FACTS

The UK Parliament House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee nitrogen inquiry is an ongoing part of a study seeking to gather evidence and a broad range of sector insights into the efficient use and management of reactive nitrogen. It aims to understand how excess reactive nitrogen could be captured and re-used, and potential solutions for reducing nitrogen pollution. It will consider the coordination of policy on nitrogen across departments and how the British government could take a more holistic and strategic approach.
