Netnod continues commitment to strong and secure route servers

Stockholm, 17 March 2021 - Netnod, the leading provider of interconnection services in the Nordics, has joined with AMS-IX, DE-CIX and LINX to support the newly founded Route Server Support Foundation (RSSF). The world’s largest Internet Exchanges selected the Dutch RSSF non-profit organisation to deliver a secure and high performance route server based on OpenBGPD. 

RSSF will tackle the lack of open source software alternatives in the high-end, mission critical route server spectrum. The ultimate goal of the cooperation is the improvement of the BGP software diversity and the strengthening of open source BGP implementations.

“Ensuring the stability and diversity of route servers is of great value to IX operators and the peering community,” said Mattias Karlsson, Head of Engineering at Netnod. “This is why Netnod has been supporting OpenBGPD developers for some years now. We look forward to the continued development under the guidance of the Route Server Support Foundation.”

Route servers make it easy for networks to manage their peering arrangements and for new peers to start exchanging traffic at an IX from day one. By connecting to a route server, a network can replace some or all of their separate BGP sessions to peers with one single session towards the IX route server.

Netnod launched a new route server platform in mid-June 2019. The new platform added significant new features including: support for Resource Public Key Infrastructure (RPKI), enabling of all standard BGP communities, and a publicly available looking glass.
