Ørsted to develop one of the world’s largest renewable hydrogen plants linked to industrial demand

Ørsted’s 'SeaH2Land' vision in the Benelux links GW-scale electrolysis to the large industrial demand in the Dutch-Flemish North Sea Port cluster through a regional cross-border pipeline. The green electricity required to produce the renewable hydrogen is proposed to come from the build-out of additional large-scale offshore wind. The major industrial companies in the region ArcelorMittal, Yara, Dow Benelux, and Zeeland Refinery, support the development of the required regional infrastructure to enable sustainably-produced steel, ammonia, ethylene, and fuels in the future, helping the Netherlands and Belgium to accelerate their carbon reductions towards 2030 and beyond.

With 580,000 tonnes per year, the North Sea Port cluster is one of the largest production and demand centres of fossil hydrogen in Europe today. The proposed electrolyser, which will produce the renewable hydrogen, will produce about 20% of this consumption in the region to renewable hydrogen. Furthermore, driven by decarbonisation efforts, industrial demand in the cluster could grow to about 1,000,000 tonnes by 2050, equivalent to roughly 10 GW of electrolysis. (press release)

Sweden’s Enequi signs first distributor in Europe

Enequi is a privately-owned developer and supplier of solutions for energy storage, electrical installation, metering and industrial automation. The QuiPower platform, with AI at its core, provides smart energy solutions. Now, Indutecc in the Netherlands, will handle the Dutch market on behalf of Enequis. According to Jeroen Panis, Sales Manager at Indutecc, the big launch challenge lies in making Dutch homeowners understand the pioneering nature of QuiPower. Since the price of buying electricity in the Netherlands is the same as the price of selling it back to the electricity grid, there are no clear economic benefits. However, there are other gains. With QuiPower, homeowners and other players can stabilize their electricity systems and take control of their own electricity consumption, as well as enable electric car charging in the home. Nordic research analyzes fuel cells and hydrogen for shipping

Shipping needs to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions significantly to achieve future goals. As a complement to energy efficiency improvements, alternative fuels are needed above all. In a new project, IVL, together with other Nordic researchers and industry players, is investigating how fuel cells and hydrogen compare with other fossil-free solutions. (IVL)
