Ørsted launches first hydrogen project near Copenhagen
Ørsted has made a final investment decision on H2RES, a demonstration project for renewable hydrogen production at Avedøre Holme in Copenhagen. H2RES will be Ørsted's first renewable hydrogen project in operation, with a capacity of 2 MW. The plant will produce around 1 tonne/day of renewable hydrogen, which will be used as fuel for road transport in Greater Copenhagen and Zealand.
Ørsted says it sees renewable hydrogen and other sustainable fuels “as the cornerstone on the road to CO2 neutrality by 2050, and H2RES will contribute important experience that can help make Europe's ambitious development goals for renewable hydrogen a new industrial success story.”
Separately, Ørsted’s partners, Everfuel and Green Hydrogen Systems announced that they had finalized agreements with Ørsted for their participation in the venture. Everfuel A/S has signed a contract with Ørsted for the offtake and distribution of green hydrogen to zero emission mobility. Everfuel will build and operate a compression and trailer-fill facility next to the electrolyser. The hydrogen will be distributed to end-users via Everfuel’s network of fueling stations in Copenhagen and Zealand. Green Hydrogen Systems is a supplier of electrolysis systems.
Over the past 18 months, Ørsted has entered into partnerships with various consortia for seven projects within renewable hydrogen in Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
Vattenfall and Preem investigate a refinery in Lysekil
Vattenfall's and Preem's collaboration to produce fossil-free hydrogen for biofuel production is taking the next step, with a study to investigate the possibilities of building a large-scale production facility at the Lysekil refinery. Preem's goal of producing 5 million cubic meters of biofuels by 2030 can reduce transport emissions by up to 12.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, corresponding to about 20% of Sweden's total emissions. This change in production requires large-scale supply of hydrogen.
The Nordic countries are some of the most dynamic and successful economies in the world. They are also leaders in sustainability, from renewable energy, biofuels, carbon capture and storage and the hydrogen economy, circular economy business models and battery development, the Nordics are pioneers in policy design, technology development and consumer uptake. Mundus Nordic Green News is covering this transition for the international community. Every day we clip the stories of most relevance to international businesspeople and policy experts from the flow of news. We supplement these with our own opinion pieces and commentary, in English. Mundus was founded in 2012 to provide information and analysis to embassies accredited to Sweden. Today, we deliver news, analysis and media monitoring of the Nordic countries to the international community in the Nordics.
