Ovako to apply for €40 million euro investment support to make the Imatra steel plant carbon-neutral

Ovako is planning the first carbon-neutral steel plant in Finland. The technology of the carbon-neutral steel plant has been tested in Ovako's Swedish unit, where hydrogen has been burned successfully in a steel heat treatment furnace. Although planning is advanced, according to Klaus Enwald, Head of Ovako's Imatra business unit, the main issue is that Ovako does not yet have funding for the project. Enwald continued that project has been presented to Finland’s Ministry of Employment and the Economy, among others. Funding for the project can also be sought through the European Union or through state aid instruments.
