Equinor considering giant hydrogen pipelines to Europe

Equinor is running a feasibility study for building and operating hydrogen pipelines to Europe, according to Steinar Eikaas, Head of Low-carbon Solutions at Equinor. The idea is to produce “blue hydrogen” (from natural gas) in Norway, exporting the hydrogen via pipelines to Europe. “What we know today is that if we are to build a plant that can justify a pipe, we are talking about hydrogen volumes in the order of 100 TWh. That will amount to about 10% of what we export as natural gas today,” says Eikaas. “If we do this, it will be gigantic.” [Ed note: 100TWh is 80% of Norway’s electricity demand]

However, there are many technical questions for the feasibility study to answer. Key amongst these are whether Norway even has sufficient natural gas from which to make the hydrogen, and where to store the CO2.
