Boliden invests in climate-smart transport
Boliden, a Swedish copper miner, is investing SEK 300 million in the expansion of electrified transports in the two opencast mines Aitik and Kevitsa during 2020–2021. The investment is based on a successful pilot project that began in 2018, for electrified transports in Aitik. A 700-meter-long electric trolley track was installed and four mining trucks were converted with increased productivity and reduced diesel consumption as a result.
Boliden aims to reduce its' CO2 intensity by 40% by 2030, and has entered into agreements for renewable electricity. But as electricity in Scandinavia already has low CO2 emissions, Boliden’s main focus is on reducing its' diesel consumption. Electric mining trucks have existed from the 1980s, with experiments made in South Africa. But today you can count on one hand how many mines in the world use the technology - Boliden is one of those.
