Volvo Group's climate goals have been approved by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTI). This means that the goals have been reviewed and scientifically validated to reach the 1.5°C goal by 2050. According to its climate goals, AB Volvo will reduce emissions by 40% per vehicle kilometer by 2030, compared with the level in 2019. Another goal is to achieve zero net emissions by 2040 on all products delivered. And by 2050, net zero emissions will have been achieved. Consequently, the majority of AB Volvo's sales in 2040 need to be electrified vehicles, either with hydrogen-based fuel cells or batteries.
This makes Volvo the best in its class, according to Martin Lundstedt. “The Volvo Group's approved goals are the most ambitious in the industry and our roadmap is in line with the Paris Agreement and SBTI's higher level of ambition, he said.” According to Peter Westman, Acting Secretary General of the World Wide Fund for Nature, "the validation means that Volvo makes commitments in accordance with the Paris Agreement on a scientific basis. We see it as great progress when companies make such serious planning and then get it validated and approved, so to speak. They are on the right track, "he says.
Lundstedt added, "This requires large investments in skilled engineers and when it comes to collaborating with customers". (Nyteknik)
