Swedish Biofuels and COWI have signed an agreement to supply the Swedish market with 400,000 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Swedish Biofuel’s technology is based on the “Alcohol to Jet” method (ATJ) for the production of the fuel that can completely replace fossil aviation fuel. The first facility will be built in Brista near Arlanda. Deliveries of the fuel are expected to start in 2025 and will become the first commercial production of sustainable aviation fuel without interference.

Statistics Sweden (SCB) has recently compiled a diagram of how bioenergy has increased in all sectors of society over the past 12 years. Svebio blogs a glowing welcome of the report, stating that while everyone is focused on either nuclear- or wind power, bioenergy tends to be forgotten. According to SCB’s diagram, there was already a relatively high share of biofuels in households, mostly in regards to heating with solid biofuels, such as wood. However, a sharp increase of biofuels can now also be found in the transport industry, as well as the construction and areal industries; with the high CO2 tax and expensive emission rights as contributing factors. The other day, PEAB announced that the company has reduced the climate impact from its asphalt by 65% via its use of bioenergy.
Since the start in 2015, Klimatklivet has in total provided support for investments that increase Swedish biogas production by 1.5 TWh, corresponding to 60% of the country’s production of 2.2 TWh. A large part of the biogas produced in Sweden is currently being used for the green transition in the transport sector, but there is also potential in using biogas for the transition in sectors such as shipping and industry. At the same time, investments in biogas has helped reduce the need to import fossil fuel from Russia to Sweden. As a result, Klimatklivet has decided to deem investments in biogas as one of its main priorities for 2022.
In order to cope with the ongoing green transition, the state-owned Svenska kraftnät has decided that it needs to employ 800 people over the next 3 years. Among the 800 people, the company is mainly looking to employ engineers, IT specialists, and licensing officers.
