Stora Enso offers unique carbon neutral cartonboard

Stora Enso has introduced Performa Light CarbonZero™, a carbon neutral, renewable and recyclable cartonboard. The news of the cartonboard produced in the Fors Mill in Sweden comes shortly after the announcement of Stora Enso’s ranking as the most sustainable company in Dagens Industri's materials sector - for the fourth year in a row. Sustainability is central to Stora Enso with the goal of becoming 100% circular, net biodiversity positive and net carbon positive by 2050, which it intends to reach by offering carbon neutral products without offsetting, according to Kristiina Veitola, Vice President Sustainability at Stora Enso Packaging Materials Division (Press release).

Echandia secures order for emission-free high-speed catamaran for commercial traffic in Stockholm

Echandia, a Stockholm-based developer of advanced battery and fuel cell systems for maritime applications, has signed an agreement to supply Green City Ferries AB with an integrated battery and hydrogen-based fuel cell system. Green City Ferries’ vessel is planned for commercial traffic in Stockholm where vessels account for half of emissions annually but use less than 5% of the energy. The agreement, supported by Klimatklivet and the EU, is worth approximately SEK 14 million, with the installation of the system on the vessel in late 2022 (Press release).

Skanska tops DI sustainability ranking: CEO wants stricter climate goals

Skanska topped Dagens Industri’s ranking of most sustainable company in the segment of capital goods – but Anders Danielsson, the CEO of Skanska, is not content. He claims that the climb to first place in the ranking is a result of Skanska’s early strategic decision to become leaders in “green building” in 2008/2009. However, he continues that it is far from enough, pointing at the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report that pushed for further reducing CO2 emissions. Skanska recently sharpened its climate sub-goal by reducing its CO2 emissions by 70% in 2030 compared to 2015 – to ultimately become climate neutral by 2045. (Dagens Industri)

Wärtsilä announces “Ready for 30” commitment: carbon neutral by 2030

Wärtsilä has announced its “Ready for 30” commitment by setting new and ambitious climate goals that it intends to reach by 2030.

  • To be carbon neutral in its own operations
  • To provide a product portfolio that accommodates zero-carbon fuels

Wärtsilä’s target covers direct greenhouse emissions from its own operations (Scope 1 emissions) and from purchased energy (Scope 2 emissions). However, emissions along a company’s value chain, including both upstream and downstream emissions (Scope 3 emissions) are not included in the “Ready for 30” commitment. The roadmap for decarbonisation is based on an analysis to identify key measures to reach each target. Measures such as energy savings, green electricity purchases, switching fuels, utilising more efficient technologies, and offsetting hard-to-abate emissions are in Wärtsilä’s toolbox (Press release).

ABB provides robot solutions to Permascand for cleaner oceans

ABB has provided three robot cells for welding processes to Permascand for enabling effective production of water-cleaning cells installed on ships that clean the oceans. The three robot-cells installed by ABB result in lower energy use, improved working environment and increased productivity. The automation project includes three main welding processes in the production of Permascand’s production of water-cleaning cells – spot welding, laser beam welding, and TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding. ABB’s three robot cells are currently in operation and the project aligns with Permascand’s ambition to electrify its operations by continuous investment in automation solutions (Press release).
