SSAB in collaboration with Polestar to develop climate-neutral car

SSAB and the Swedish electric car company Polestar have signed a letter of intent to start a strategic collaboration to create a climate-neutral car, also known as the Polestar 0 Project. The collaboration will explore all possibilities with SSAB’s fossil-free steel, both with the aim of replacing conventional steel that is normally used in cars, and trying to replace other materials that have a significant carbon footprint. The vehicle will be developed in close cooperation to jointly limit climate impact and develop a more sustainable automotive industry.

ABB signs intent agreement with IBM and Worley

Swiss-Swedish industrialists, ABB have signed a letter of intent with IBM and the Australian energy and raw materials service company Worley. The agreement regards cooperation in helping energy companies build and operate green hydrogen plants more efficiently and on a large scale.

Nordic Ren-Gas plans to construct EUR 150 million hydrogen plant in Finland

The Tampere plant and Nordic Ren-Gas are currently planning to build a green hydrogen production plant in Tampere. The plant will have a capacity of 60 MW and produce renewable methane and green hydrogen. Business Finland has granted financial support of EUR 1.5 million for the project. In total, the plant would be an investment of EUR 150 million. The construction of the plants could begin in 2023-2024, however it will take until 2028 before the plants is fully ready for operation.

Wärtsilä and Solstad Offshore to collaborate on decarbonisation 

Solstad Offshore has entered into collaboration with technology company, Wärtsilä to find the best way to reduce the carbon footprint of Solstad Offshore’s 90 vessels. Each individual ship will be assessed with regard to appropriate solutions, possible operational improvements and life extension considerations. The two parties have set a goal of reducing the fleet’s CO2 emissions by 50% by 2030, however Solstad hopes to achieve full carbon neutrality by 2050.

Mærsk Supply Service wins important order of offshore wind in Spain

Mærsk Supply Service is set to supply a mooring system for an offshore wind turbine installation in Bilbao, Spain. The project, which is partly financed by the German energy company RWE Renewables, will be the first to supply electricity from offshore wind farms to the Spanish electricity grid. The project team is now being assembled to prepare for the upcoming offshore installation in the 2Q22.

Profit boost for OX2 during 4Q21

Renewable power developer, OX2 reported an operating profit of SEK 317 million for the 4Q21. The company’s net sales rose to SEK 2.4 billion and their full-year result landed at SEK 334 million.

SENS publishes year-end report for 2021

Swedish company SENS recently published its year-end report for 2021, in which the company also reported on its plans for the future. For example, using EUR 4.1 million in  funding via the ERA-Net SES Micall19 framework, SENS is currently focusing on its three-year long NewSETS project, which creates new energy storage solutions on Åland. The year-end report also includes the company’s joint venture together with Oloenviron in South Africa, also known as SENS-OLO South Africa, in which SENS owns 50% of the shares. SENS is further looking to expand its presence in South Africa with the aim of building a project portfolio of 8-12 projects within 12 months.

SWISS equips entire Boeing 777-300ER fleet with AeroSHARK

SWISS has decided to equip its entire Boeing long-haul fleet with the fuel-saving AeroSHARK surface technology. Starting in the middle of the year, a total of twelve Boeing 777-300ERs will gradually be fitted with the riblet films developed jointly by Lufthansa Technik and BASF. The significantly reduced frictional resistance resulting from this modification will make the sub-fleet more than 1% more fuel-efficient and lower in emissions.
