Together, RISE and Circle Economy have produced The Circularity Gap Report Sweden, an in-depth analysis of how the country consumes different materials, from food and consumer goods to housing and mobility. The report, which was produced on behalf of RE:Source, shows that the Swedish economy is only 3.4% circular, which is to be compared with the global average of 8.6% and, for example, 9.7% in Austria and 24.5% in the Netherlands. However, there is potential to increase circularity. With the right measures, such as manufacturing and building circular, reshaping the extractive industry and having responsible design of consumables, the circularity can more than double to 7.6%.
Yesterday, Mundus Nordic Green News covered that Nelwas going to hold an official opening of Herøya, the world’s first fully automated electrolyser production facility, on 20 April. Customers, partners and the Norwegian Minister of Energy and Petroleum were invited to the opening. During the opening, Nel’s CEO Jon André Løkke, referred to the new facility as a game changer, stating that “This is a very important step in Nel’s history. We have called this a game changer. This factory can supply five times the world’s demand in 2019.” It was also revealed that there is a long queue of customers hoping to reserve capacity. In order to expand production further and increase the capacity to 2 GW, Jon André Løkke called for state support, which the Minister of Petroleum and Energy did not reject.
An Australian producer of hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles H2X, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Trelleborg municipality on deliveries of a hydrogen school bus and garbage truck. The hydrogen bus and garbage truck will be the first of ten vehicles for Trelleborg and the bus will be the first high-floor bus produced by H2X Global in Europe, driven by hydrogen fuel cells and supercapacitors. The agreement, which was negotiated by Trelleborgs Energi, is part of the energy company’s long-term work towards introducing hydrogen in the municipality.
Sirius Design & Integration AS has been awarded a contract with Gen2 Energy to partner up on the development of two specialised ships for transport of large quantities of containers using compressed hydrogen. The two container carriers will consist of large vessels, approximately 190 metres long and with a load capacity of 500 units.
Following the Danish Government’s reform proposal “Denmark kan mere II”, Linde Gas’ plan of investing EUR 250 million in the construction of a large hydrogen plant has become more realistic. The new 100 MW hydrogen plant would produce hydrogen with green electricity at the previously closed down Enstad plant at Aabenraa. The Port of Aadenraa has reserved 180,000m2 for the new Power-to-X plant.
The Finnish energy investment company Korkia and the renewable energy developer Climate ER have entered into a partnership for the development of solar energy production in Europe. The joint venture aims to develop up to 500 MW of ready-to-build solar energy over the next 3 years. Their first project, Mere Flats Solar Farm, will provide enough energy for approximately 13,000 British households and will be able to be built and operated without state support. The aim is for the new solar farm to produce green electricity for the UK over the next 40 years.
Japan will start importing biojet from Finland’s Neste in 1Q23 for distribution to Japanese and foreign airlines to cut the carbon footprints of its aviation industry, as reported by Nikkei Asia on April 14. The Japanese government will start a two-month trial in early 2023 to evaluate flight routes and storage methods for test aircraft running on sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs), before it promotes such fuel to airlines nationwide in April 2023 or later.
