New multi-billion order for Hitachi Energy

Hitachi Energy, formerly Hitachi ABB Power Grids, continues to grow after a new multi-billion order. Hundreds of new recruits will now be required in Sweden. It has been previously reported that the company is in need of large-scale recruitment after an order for a new electricity connection between Saudi Arabia and Egypt. Now a new project for the United Arab Emirates, in the multi-billion class, means that another hundred needs to be recruited to the Swedish facilities in Ludvika and Västerås. “So far, we have employed around 250, but the projects are long-term, so the employment will run over a longer period. We need to fill positions from engineering to project management,” says Niklas Persson, managing director for the business unit at Grid integration at Hitachi Energy.

The project in Abu Dhabi involves Hitachi Energy - in collaboration with Samsung - building an electricity connection with high-voltage direct current, so-called HVDC, between the mainland to oil and gas platforms in the Persian Gulf. Construction is expected to be completed in 2026–2027.

Ørsted one of the auction winners in new wind power projects awarded in Scotland

Ørsted participated in a consortium that has been chosen by Crown Estate Scotland (CES) to enter into an option agreement for an area for floating offshore wind off the northeast coast of Scotland.

The project is Ørsted's first large-scale floating wind project worldwide and at the same time expands Ørsted's Scottish business, which has so far been focused on onshore winds, to include offshore wind.

In the Scottish auction, a total of 17 projects were selected out of a total of 74 applications. In total, the 17 projects provide the opportunity to build 24.8GW of offshore wind energy over an area of over 7,000 square kilometers.

Ørsted participated in the auction via five projects totaling 8.5 gigawatts, and equity analyst Per Fogh from Sydbank is diappointed after the company had secured only 1GW. “I was expecting more than the 1GW they have been allocated. There is no doubt that it testifies to the competitive situation that is right now. in offshore wind and green energy in general. You just have to say that there are really many who have played on the field to get a part of these Scottish seabeds.”

Gasgrid Finland and Nordion Energi have to investigate hydrogen infrastructure and market development in the Gulf of Bothnia

The national system operators for gas transmission (TSO) in Finland and Sweden, Gasgrid Finland and Nordion Energi, have agreed to investigate the conditions for developing new hydrogen infrastructure in the Gulf of Bothnia. The demand for hydrogen, which will mainly be used to enable the conversion and expansion of the industries in the region, is estimated at 100 TWh. In the Gulf of Bothnia, there is potential to develop the first cross-border, integrated infrastructure for hydrogen in the Nordic region, with both companies having identified a large demand for hydrogen from customers and stakeholders in the region.

In the spring of 2022, the companies will analyze the potential in more detail and present a regional forecast for the hydrogen and electricity needs for 2025-2045. The companies also aim to develop proposals for a possible laying of hydrogen networks as part of the future energy infrastructure in the region. During this phase, Gasgrid Finland and Nordion Energi plan dialogues with stakeholders in the future value chain for hydrogen producers, industries and authorities in both countries.
