Verdane, a European growth equity investor, has announced it will neutralise all its future residual emissions with permanent carbon removals, including using Climeworks’ direct air capture and storage credits, as well as those from two other carbon removal companies. Verdane said in a press release that it will start with an initial purchase covering its 2022 and 2023 Scope 1-3 forecast emissions. The removal will be spread over several years, covering several thousand tonnes of CO2. Verdane has set a target to achieve net zero Scope 1-2 emissions in 2022 and reduce Scope 3 emissions intensity by 65% in 2030 compared to 2021.
Yesterday, Mundus Nordic Green News covered that due to technical design complications, Green Hydrogen Systems had to suspend its 2022 forecast. Following the announcement, the company’s share fell 2.8%, but by the end of the day Green Hydrogen System’s share ended at DKK 21.20, a fall of 24.8%. ESL Shipping is joining BotnialänkenH2. The partnership strengthens both ESL Shipping’s strategic work for fossil-free shipping and BotnialänkenH2, which now covers the entire value chain. BotnialänkenH2 is a joint project between the energy company Uniper, ABB Sweden, the Port of Luleå and Luleå Energi. By producing fossil-free hydrogen, BotnialänkenH2 wants to offer customers in the transport sector, industry and society a fossil-free alternative to fuel, electricity and heat and thus contribute to accelerating the green transition in Luleå and Sweden. The joint project holds the capacity of reducing CO2 emissions by up to 235,000 tonnes annually.
Jens Brandt Berin, CEO of Niras, has responded to the Danish PM Mette Frederiksen’s announcement that all Danish private homes must move away from natural gas to alternative energy sources. In his statement, the CEO looks at the possibilities of finding the right balance between long-term efforts for green energy conversion and the more short-term ones that are about minimising Denmark’s dependence on Russian natural gas. Options that are believed to make a difference before the next winter are, among other things, saving energy in all energy systems, constructing new biogas plants and accelerating expansions, a temporary industrial rollback to oil and LPG and lastly, accelerating the expansion of sun and wind.
In 2021, the energy storage company SaltX Technology began a collaboration with LuleKraft, Luleå Energi and metal research institute Swerim, with the goal of reducing CO2 emissions for industry in the region. A feasibility study was carried out, which showed that SaltX energy storage can be an important part of the steel industry’s pursuit of higher energy efficiency and lower climate impact. However, the project has been put on hold while SaltX and Swerim begin to work on a study focusing on energy storage for the steel industry in Sweden. “SaltX chooses not to proceed with the planned construction of a pilot plant as the transition to green steel is a priority in the region. We are compliant and will deepen our collaboration with Swerim to utilise our technical solution and knowledge to meet the green transition of the steel industry”, said Carl-Johan Linér, CEO of SaltX.
