Norway’s Government presents offshore wind ambitions and opens to more interconnectors

During a press conference today, the Norwegian Government presented their future ambitions for the country’s offshore wind production. In the upcoming 20 years, Norway will go from having a total of 2 offshore wind turbines to 1,500, with a goal to develop 30,000 MW of offshore wind. The Government is now planning a step-by-step allocation of area for the new wind turbines and is hoping to open an area which is about 5 to 6 times as large as the Southern North Sea II, corresponding to 1% of Norway’s sea areas. In conjunction with the ambitious developments, the Government has decided to accept new foreign interconnector cables in the country.

Giant Blekinge Offshore wind proposal is back at the negotiating table

In 2016, the Swedish Government declined the application for the record-breaking planned offshore wind farm Blekinge Offshore. However, five years later preparations for a new attempt are underway again. The goal is to get a permit for the now reworked project, which is estimated to cost SEK 25 billion. The project was previously declined by the Government due to the strategic defence location of Hanöbukten where the wind farm was planned to be built. After some moderation, the reworked project can now be implemented with regard to, among other things, the interests of Sweden’s defence.

Luleå University discovers new way to produce low-emission fuel

A new, competitive way to produce low-emission fuel has been found at LUT University, in collaboration with the Technical University of Munich. The raw material used is by-products of the forest industry and wood, from which acetic acid is produced. Together with hydrogen, the Power-to-X technology is then able to produce ethanol for carbon-neutral transport. The tax-free cost per litre of the new fuel would amount to EUR 0.56-0.74, producing 75% less GHG emissions than gasoline.
