Yara and JERA Co., a Japanese power company, have signed a letter of intent for cooperation in production, deliveries and supply chain development for blue and green ammonia, to enable emission-free production of thermal power in Japan.
Japan recently announced plans to phase ammonia into the fuel mix for thermal power generation, as part of reducing CO2 emissions and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. As part of its green growth strategy, the Government aims for ammonia imports of three million tonnes by 2030. Under the letter of intent, Yara and JERA aim to cooperate in the following areas:
Svein Tore Holsether, CEO of Yara said “This groundbreaking collaboration aims to decarbonize JERA's power generation and give Yara a presence in the strategically important Japanese market. Building value chains for blue and green ammonia is crucial to enable the hydrogen economy, and collaboration with a key player such as JERA marks a milestone in utilizing Yara's global capacity and network.
Yara is a world leader in ammonia, with extensive experience and leading positions in global production, logistics and trade in ammonia. The Oslo-based company produces approximately 8.5 million tonnes of ammonia annually. Yara operates a fleet of 11 ammonia vessels, including five wholly owned vessels, and owns 18 marine ammonia terminals with a total storage capacity of 580 kilotons - enabling the production and transport of ammonia worldwide. Ecoclime Group is a Swedish leading supplier of real estate technology for recycling, charging, storage, extraction and distribution of recycled and renewable thermal energy. In 2017, in a first company in the world at its time, Ecoclime introduced circular energy systems and a vision to make properties' total energy supply 100% renewable, while improving indoor comfort, through an economically sustainable business model that creates profits for both property owners and investors and the environment.
Last week the company decided to bring forward the first stage to increase the annual delivery capacity of the Evertherm energy system to 100 GWh of green fossil-free energy, due to a forecasted increase in demand in both the residential and industrial segments in Sweden and Germany. This capacity corresponds to the amount of energy used in 15,000 new apartments in Sweden. In the next few years, Ecoclime's factory in Vilhelmina in Västerbotten will be expanded by 2,100m2 and 35 new employees will be hired, of which 25 will be employed at the factory.
