Ørsted reports that the Hornsea 2 offshore wind farm, the largest of its kind in the world, is now fully operational. The record-breaking offshore wind farm, with a capacity of 1.3 GW and a fleet of 165 wind turbines, is located 89 km off the coast of Yorkshire in the north-east of England. Ørsted cited the importance of Hornsea 2's landmark projects, which are helping to improve security of supply and make the UK's energy supply more robust, while reducing costs to consumers by decreasing the UK's reliance on expensive fossil fuels.
During 2021, 141 new wind turbines were built in Finland. But, 154 new wind turbines were built in Finland at the beginning of 2022, and in the first half of 2022, more wind turbines were built than in the whole of the previous year combined. Wind energy will rapidly increase Finland's energy self-sufficiency in the coming years, says Anna Tiihonen, Communications Manager at the Finnish Wind Energy Association. While wind power produces around 10% of Finland's electricity today, the figure will be at least 27% by 2025. Even after that, the growth rate is expected to continue at a rapid pace. In terms of capacity, this year has already managed to break previous records. Last year a total of 671 MW of capacity was completed, while in June this year the figure was already 784 MW, and Anna says that the total capacity is expected to exceed the 5,000 MW this year.
In autumn 2023, Skellefteå Kraft and OKQ8 will support investment in two renewable hydrogen refuelling stations in Västerbotten. The aim is to facilitate the transformation of long-distance heavy road transport. Skellefteå Kraft already has a strong focus on electric vehicles and the establishment of the hydrogen stations further strengthens this investment. Skellefteå Kraft is the only company to have received a grant from the Energy Agency to build a renewable hydrogen refuelling station in Västerbotten. By 2026, a total of 400 light vehicle charging stations will be built jointly in Sweden and Denmark. In addition to this, Skellefteå Kraft will build 26 heavy transport charging stations in Sweden together with Volvo Trucks in 2023.
The first Power-to-X (PtX) plant in Esbjerg will be built by EuroEnergy in the first half of 2023. The plant will produce green hydrogen for ships calling at the port of Esbjerg and for industrial customers in Denmark. DIN Forsyning has reached an agreement with EuroEnergy company to take excess heat from the production, which will be able to heat 200 ordinary homes during the start-up phase.
