CIP to lead giant green hydrogen project in Spain

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) will lead a project in Spain to build a giant hydrogen plant,  as part of the Spanish government’s efforts to use EU funds to become a top producer of the gas. Danish wind turbine maker Vestas, will also participate, as will Spanish energy company Naturgy, pipeline-operator Enagas and fertiliser-maker Fertiberia. The project is in Aragon, northeastern Spain, which offers very good conditions to develop this technology given the excellent wind and sun potential and the proximity to centres of demand,” according to Soren Toftgard, a partner at CIP

Work is expected to begin late next year, and when built the plant will have capacity of 40,000 tonnes of hydrogen per year from a 2GW electrolyser, or around 30% of Spain’s current hydrogen demand.

The hydrogen produced will be piped to Valencia where it will be used as raw material to produce fertilisers, CIP said.

Feasibility planning for a hydrogen investment of more than EUR 100 million begins in Mikkeli, Finland

Etelä-Savon Energia Oy (ESE) and Nordic Ren-Gas Oy have signed a cooperation agreement on the feasibility planning of a Power-to-Gas production plant producing renewable methane and green hydrogen. The plant complex to be built in the Pursiala power plant area in Mikkeli is a significant investment in the hydrogen economy. The planned Power-to-Gas plant, with an electrolytic capacity of more than 40 MW, will produce synthetic renewable methane annually to replace about 17 million liters of fossil diesel in heavy road transport, corresponding to the annual consumption of about 600 heavy vehicles in Finland. The project will proceed in stages, with the total value of the investment being more than 100 million euros.

According to ESE, the project will help achieve the company's carbon neutrality goals and create a basis for competitive district heating production, as the company will receive a significant amount of waste-free, carbon dioxide-free district heating from the plant.

Almi Invest GreenTech invests in NitroCapt's fossil-free fertilizers

Almi Invest GreenTech is investing SEK 7 million in NitroCapt, which is developing a process for fossil-free, environmentally friendly production of fertilizers. LRF Ventures and others, are participating in the issue of SEK 18 million. The capital will be used for commercialization and construction of a pilot plant.

The production of nitrogen fertilizer contributes strongly negatively to the greenhouse effect because today it is produced on a large scale using natural gas, coal or oil and then transported long distances. NitroCapt solves this problem through its new technology, where nitrogen fertilizer is produced on a small scale in a patented completely green electric process. Air contains 78% nitrogen and with NitroCapt's process you can extract the nitrogen and convert it into fertilizer in a simple, cheap and environmentally friendly way. The innovation is about pioneering ways to reduce energy consumption in nitrogen fixation and implement it in a single step.

Uppsala-based NitroCapt, which is at an early stage, will develop a pilot plant in 2022 to commercialize the technology in a subsequent step. In the coming years, the plan is, with experience from the pilot, to build a full-scale factory in order to later carry out rapid scaling up of the business. We are very happy with this investment, says Gustaf Forsberg, CEO and founder of NitroCapt. Thanks to this, we can start recruiting a number of highly qualified engineers and take the first step towards a commercialization of our process.

New monthly wind power production record in Sweden

In January, wind power delivered 4.2TWh of electricity, which is a new monthly record, and exceeded production for the whole of 2010 (approximately 3.5 TWh). According to Tomas Hallberg, responsible for permit issues at Svensk Vindenergi, “wind power thrives best in winter, when electricity is needed most. 60% of the production takes place in the winter. According to Svensk Vindenergi, the expansion of wind power is strong in the next few years. In 2024, the annual production of wind power is expected to be around 49 TWh, an increase of around 20 TWh from 2021.
