Tamron introduces the 16-50mm F2.8 A a new standard zoom for APS-C mirrorless cameras. Combining a versatile 16-50mm focal range with a constant F2.8 aperture, fast VXD autofocus and a compact design weighing from just 305 g, the lens is made for photographers and hybrid creators looking for one flexible lens for everyday use, travel and video.
The new lens will be available for Sony E, Canon RF, Nikon Z and Fujifilm X mounts. Sony E and Canon RF versions are scheduled for release in October 2026, followed by Nikon Z on in November and Fujifilm X on in December.
A versatile range from wide-angle to portrait
The 16-50mm range covers a broad variety of subjects, from landscapes, architecture, interiors and group photos to street photography, travel, portraits and details.
On Sony E, Nikon Z and Fujifilm X cameras, the lens provides a full-frame equivalent range of approximately 24-75mm. On Canon RF APS-C cameras, the equivalent range is approximately 25.6-80mm.
Starting at 16mm gives photographers a genuinely useful wide-angle perspective, while the longer end provides a more compressed view for portraits and tighter compositions. This makes the lens a practical choice when travelling light or when changing lenses regularly is not ideal.
Constant F2.8 in a lightweight design
A constant F2.8 maximum aperture is available throughout the entire zoom range. The fast aperture provides greater control over depth of field, makes it easier to separate subjects from the background and allows faster shutter speeds when working in lower light.
Despite the constant F2.8 aperture, Tamron has kept the lens compact. The Sony E version measures 79.6 mm in length and weighs 305 g. Depending on the mount, weight ranges from 305 to 315 g, and all versions use 55 mm filters.
The balance between size, weight and aperture makes the 16-50mm F2.8 particularly well suited to smaller APS-C camera systems and photographers who want to keep their everyday setup compact.
Fast VXD autofocus for stills and video
Autofocus is driven by Tamron's VXD linear motor system, providing fast and precise focusing and subject tracking. The system is designed to handle moving subjects such as children and pets while its quiet operation also makes it suitable for video recording.
Close focusing adds further versatility
At 16mm, the lens focuses down to just 0.15 m and provides a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.5. At 50mm, the minimum focusing distance is 0.29 m with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.8.
This allows the lens to move easily from general photography to close-ups of food, objects, flowers and other smaller details.
The optical construction consists of 14 elements in 10 groups, combined with a seven-blade circular diaphragm. Moisture-resistant construction provides additional protection when working outdoors, while a fluorine coating on the front element helps make fingerprints, moisture and dirt easier to remove.
With its combination of a wide-to-short-telephoto zoom range, constant F2.8 aperture, fast autofocus and compact construction, the Tamron 16-50mm F2.8 is a versatile standard zoom for photographers who want to cover a wide range of everyday subjects with a single lens.
