Laowa introduces two new lenses: the 17mm f/4 Zero-D Tilt-Shift and the 17mm f/4 Zero-D Shift. Both are ultra-wide manual focus lenses built around Laowa's Zero-D optical design, which corrects perspective distortion optically rather than through post-processing. They are aimed at architectural and landscape photographers who require precise control over converging lines and image geometry.

What tilt-shift lenses do

A tilt-shift lens combines two independent mechanical movements that are not possible with conventional fixed-mount lenses.

Shift moves the optical axis parallel to the sensor, allowing photographers to reframe a scene without tilting the camera body. This keeps vertical and horizontal lines straight, which is essential for architectural photography. When photographing a tall building with a standard lens, tilting the camera upward to include the top causes vertical lines to converge toward a vanishing point. Shifting the lens upward instead keeps the camera level and the lines parallel.

Tilt rotates the lens plane relative to the sensor, which changes the orientation of the focal plane. In practical terms, this has two main applications. When the focal plane is angled to run along a flat surface such as a floor, tabletop, or landscape receding into the distance, depth of field can be extended across the entire scene without stopping the aperture down. Conversely, when the tilt is used in the opposite direction, the zone of sharpness becomes an extremely narrow band across the frame, making real-world scenes appear as miniature scale models. Both effects are produced in-camera without digital manipulation.

The two lenses

Laowa 17mm f/4 Zero-D Shift. The Shift version offers up to 11mm of shift in either direction. It is designed for photographers who primarily need perspective correction and want a slightly lighter and less expensive option.

Laowa 17mm f/4 Zero-D Tilt-Shift. The Tilt-Shift version adds up to 10 degrees of tilt in either direction, along with a slightly wider shift range of 12mm. It is suited for photographers who want both perspective correction and creative focal plane control in a single lens.

When used on medium-format mirrorless cameras, the image circle limits shift to 8mm on both lenses.
Both lenses are available now in Sony E, Canon RF, Nikon Z, L-Mount, Fujifilm GFX, and Hasselblad XCD mounts.
