Tornado Safety Tips

Tornado touches downTornado touches down

Tornadoes are dangerous storms that can happen anytime and anywhere. About 1,200 tornadoes affect the U.S. every year, destroying buildings, knocking down trees and power lines, and dislodging propane tanks and equipment. These storms are more common during the summer, posing a greater risk to you and your family’s safety.

At Ferrellgas, we recognize that family comes first, and we want to help you be prepared! It’s important to make an emergency preparedness plan listing contact information for your Ferrellgas office[KS1]  and emergency services, along with instructions for turning off propane, electricity, and water. Never store or use a propane tank indoors or in an enclosed area such as a shed, basement, or garage. For more information on propane safety, you can view these videos from the Propane Education & Research Council.

If there is a tornado alert in your area, you should take shelter immediately. If you are inside a building, go to the lowest level possible such as a basement or a storm cellar. If there is no basement, go to the center of a room on the lowest level. If you are in a mobile home or vehicle, leave and seek cover in a sturdy building or shelter. Make sure to stay up to date on the weather conditions using a phone or radio.

After a tornado has passed and once it is safe to go outside, inspect your property for damage. If it is dark, use flashlights, not candles. Call Ferrellgas so a qualified professional can inspect your tank and propane systems before turning them back on. If you smell gas, leave the area immediately and call us so that we can check for a leak and complete any needed repairs[KS2] [WC3] .

Tornadoes may also knock out the power in your area, leaving you and your family without electricity. For a reliable power source, consider purchasing a propane-powered generator in case of emergency. You can also light your outdoor grill with Blue Rhino propane to heat up canned goods and leftovers from the fridge that would otherwise go bad. To find your nearest Blue Rhino retailer, click here.

For any disaster situation, we recommend keeping a disaster supply kit stocked with medicine, food, and water, along with copies of your family’s important documents. If you have any pets, make sure to pack any important supplies they need as well!

By tracking the weather alerts and preparing beforehand, you will be ready for any disaster that comes your way. From our Ferrellgas family to yours, we wish you a fun and safe summer!
