Staying Safe from Wildfires this Summer

Many people have felt the dangerous effects of wildfires across the country. This spring, wildfire smoke affected millions of residents by polluting the air that they breathe, and during 2022, more than 68,000 wildfires burned throughout the U.S. These fires often cause damage to homes and property, including propane tanks and appliances.

With the summer months being the peak season for wildfires, the safety of our customers always comes first! Make sure to clear 10 feet of space around your propane tank and grill. You don’t want anything that is combustible or easily ignited, such as leaves, brush, vegetation, and rags, to be too close. Most importantly, never store or use a propane tank indoors or in an enclosed area such as a shed, basement, or garage. For more information on staying safe with propane, you can read these wildfire safety tips from the Propane Education & Research Council.

If there is a wildfire alert in your area, you should turn off the gas supply valves to your propane tank and appliances if it is safe to do so. If you have a propane fireplace or log set, also close any screen, door, or damper. Furthermore, local leaders may send out an evacuation notice, which could mean that your home is in the fire’s direct path. To keep yourself and your family safe, we recommend following any evacuation orders and keeping up to date on the conditions using a phone or radio.

During the aftermath of the wildfire, take caution when inspecting your property for damages, and if it is dark, use flashlights, not candles. Contact your Ferrellgas office for a qualified technician to inspect your tank and appliances before turning them back on. If you smell gas, leave the area immediately and call so that we can check for a leak and make any necessary repairs.

Wildfires can also damage power lines and other infrastructure, leaving families without electricity for an extended period of time. After your propane system has been inspected, consider using a reliable energy source with a propane-powered generator. You can also power your grill with Blue Rhino propane to heat up food that would otherwise go bad or rotten. Find your nearest Blue Rhino location here.

The risk of wildfires can be frightening, but making an emergency preparedness plan for your family can help you stay safe. Keep instructions for evacuation routes on hand, as well as the numbers for emergency services, your utilities provider, and your Ferrellgas office. We also recommend keeping a disaster supply kit stocked with medicine, food, and water, along with copies of important personal documents. Don’t forget about your pets, too! Be sure to pack any important supplies they may need if you have to evacuate.

By planning in advance and following safety practices, your family will be better protected against any potential wildfire threat. We hope you have a safe summer!
