Ferrellgas cares about the safety of our customers, employees, and the communities we serve. That’s why we want everyone to know that the annual Atlantic Hurricane Season is now underway, running from June 1st – November 30th. Experts are predicting that it will be an average season, with roughly 12 to 17 named tropical storms in the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. About five to nine could become hurricanes.

If a storm hits your neighborhood, know that Ferrellgas is here for you! Our crews will be doing everything they can to make deliveries and keep things running as smoothly as possible. If at any time you smell gas or notice your propane tank is dislodged from the storm or flooding, please contact us immediately so we can assess the situation. We want you and your family to stay safe before, during, and after the storm.

If you live in a hurricane-prone area, there are steps you can take ahead of time to be prepared. First, consider picking up a portable propane-powered generator. There are many benefits, and it’s a great way to keep parts of your home running, even if the power goes out. You may also want to invest in a backup generator system for your whole house. Many types kick on automatically if you lose power. You should always operate generators outside in an area that’s properly ventilated and follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions. Secondly, if local leaders advise you to evacuate, we recommend following their guidance. It usually means you are in the direct path of a hurricane. Temporarily leaving your home could mean the difference between dangerous conditions or safety for you and your family.

Whether you evacuate or choose to ride out a storm, you should also have an emergency kit packed and ready to go. It should contain several days of food and water, first aid items, batteries, cell phone chargers, medications, copies of important documents, necessities for your children and pets, and other supplies. And don’t forget to stock up on extra Blue Rhino propane! Gas grills are a great resource in the event of a power outage because they give you the ability to cook for your family with no electricity. You’ll be able to have a hot, grilled meal even if the power is out. And, you’ll be able to use up perishable food before it spoils, and heat up canned food, too. You can find more storm safety tips from Blue Rhino here.

You’ll also want to stock up on the things you’ll need to shore up your home. That includes plywood and nails to board up windows, sandbags to minimize flooding, and plastic sheeting to keep out the wind and rain if a window breaks.

With some careful planning and preparation, you’ll be ready for hurricane season in no time! We hope you and your family stay safe, no matter what Mother Nature brings, especially during the hurricane season.
