Ferrellgas Urges Caution When Assessing Hurricane Damage

Extreme weather can happen anywhere, any time of year. The recent damage caused by Hurricanes Helene and Milton has provided a powerful reminder of the significant widespread impact these types of storms can have. Our hearts go out to everyone who has been affected by these storms.

If you live in a propane-powered home, we want to remind you to take precautions when assessing damage after a storm. If a hurricane damages your property, be sure to use extreme caution as you evaluate the condition of your home and any other structures, especially when it comes to your propane system.

At Ferrellgas, the safety of our customers and our employee-owners is our number one priority. Here are some important, storm-related reminders from the Propane Education & Research Council:

  • If for any reason you smell propane, evacuate the area and call 911.
  • We encourage you to shut off your propane tank before evacuating. When you return, remember that regulations require you to make sure your system is tested by a qualified person before the gas is turned back on.
  • If you don’t have power when you return home, remember to never use outdoor propane equipment in enclosed areas. This includes propane grills, fire pits, and patio heaters. These types of equipment require adequate ventilation to function properly and safely.
  • After a storm, you should also inspect your propane tank, gas lines, and appliances for any damage. If you notice any visible damage, or if your tank has shifted out of place or dislodged, contact your propane provider.

Propane is a versatile, portable, fuel that can offer options to people who have been impacted by natural disasters. A propane-powered generator may provide peace of mind if you lose power. Some models are designed to power a few appliances, while others will power an entire home. In addition, using a propane grill outside your home may give you cooking options after the storm, especially if your power is out.

Ferrellgas is proud to be a part of the recovery efforts following Hurricanes Helene and Milton and will continue to serve our customers to the best of our ability in the impacted areas. Thank you to everyone who is helping these communities during such a critical time, especially our first responders. Together, we can help the healing begin.
